소설 문학의 아버지를 들라면 주저 없이 라블레를 꼽아도 좋다. 물론 그 이전에도 몇몇 “소설 비슷한” 시도가 있었지만, 라블레의 『가르강튀아와 팡타그뤼엘』이야말로 수사학적 에너지와 해박한 지식을 바탕으로 한 재치, 언어 유희, 유머 등이 모두 어우러져 있으며, ‘소설’이라는 새로운 장르의 주춧돌을 놓은 작품이라 해도 과언이 아니다. 라블레는 지나칠 정도로 감각적이고, 때로는 외설스럽고 음탕하기까지 한 다양한 표현들을 사용하여, 훗날 『돈키호테』에서 『율리시즈』에 이르는 희극의 포문을 열었다. 아마도 라블레의 가장 위대한 점은 분수를 모르고 흥청대는 천박한 물질주의를 가장 인간적인 재치로 비꼬아 보여줄 수 있었던 그의 자유로운 정신일 것이다.

작품의 주인공은 거인 가르강튀아와 그의 아들 팡타그뤼엘이다. 제1권에서는 어린 시절 팡타그뤼엘과 그의 익살꾼 친구 파뉴르지가 겪는 환상적인 사건들이 그려진다. 제2권에서는 가르강튀아의 가계를 거슬러 올라간다. 특히 구시대적인 교육 방식과 케케묵은 학풍을 풍자의 대상으로 삼은 점이 눈에 띈다. 제3권 역시 팡타그뤼엘의 영웅적인 무훈과 말을 빌려 학문 위주의 교육에 회의를 표한다. 제4권에서 팡타그뤼엘과 파뉴르지는 성스러운 병(甁)의 신탁을 얻기 위해 중국으로 여행을 떠나는데, 이들의 여정을 통해 지나치게 종교 중심적인 사회를 풍자한다. 제5권에서 그들은 마침내 성스러운 병을 모신 신전을 찾게 되고, “마셔라!”라는 신탁을 받게 된다. 다소 앞뒤가 들어맞지 않는 구성으로 피카레스크 소설의 수준까지는 도달하지 못했지만, 서술 자체의 발랄함은 매력 그 자체다.
