Having searched for a good, reasonably thorough, basic English grammar, this one of Thomas Wood, written in 1910, fits the bill. It will set your feet on the road to understanding grammar, although it will be necessary to move on as you advance in understanding.

Please note, I am using an original 1910 copy, and have not viewed this modern reprint, so some editting may affect my comments.

Sensibly laid out, great economy of words, good examples, logical progression, with exercises, it is excellent. One lack, though, is that the correct answers to the exercises are not provided, so one cannot check one's progress.

In a few areas, it is understandably outmoded, such as in the use of "shall" and "will". However even there, I found his brief discussion quite helpful.

Too many other grammars are either so geared for beginners they fail to address commonly occuring questions, or wind off into unhelpful analyses and are quite impractical. This book is set at a level that will do for most people who seriously want the big picture. It is good for private study, and would be very good in a classroom setting, for which it was designed.
