책소개

이 작품은 영국 노동자 계급 문학의 걸출한 고전이지만, 이 책을 읽는 독자는 그 어조에 먼저 놀라게 될 것이다. 그 심장부에는 자본주의에 대한 지적이고, 정열적이고, 절제된 공격이 자리하지만, 사회주의의 필요성을 느끼지 못함으로써 자신의 자녀를 똑같이 착취로 몰아넣는 노동자들 역시 신랄하게 비판 하고 있기 때문이다.

이 소설은 어떤 서스펜스나 화술이 아니라 최소한의 소득도 보장받지 못하는 인생에 대한 사소한 탐구로 독자의 주의를 고정시킨다는 점에서 확실히 특이한 작품이다. 전체적인 이야기는 고용주에게 속아 넘어가는 이들에 대한 분노로 들끓고 있다. 심지어 고용주들은 그렇게 할 수밖에 없다는 암시로 들리기도 한다. 그러나 이 소설은 전통적인 개념의 노동자 계급뿐만 아니라 노동의 본질, 그리고 노동에 대한 긍지가 어떻게 “효율성”의 요구에 의해 파괴와 조롱의 대상이 되는지를 고찰하고 있다. 필연적으로 노동자들에게는 신속한 작업이 요구되며 그로 인해 노동을 통해 느끼는 순수한 만족은 온데간데없이 사라지고 만다.

이 작품의 주인공 역시 그의 “재능”을 발휘하고자 애쓰지만 “시스템”에 의해 끊임없이 거부당한다. 『떨어진 바지를 입은 자선가』는 에드워드 시대 영국의 폭넓은 사회주의 운동과 맥을 같이 하며, 러스킨이나 모리스 같은 작가들로 이어지게 된다. (죽기 전에 꼭 읽어야 할 책 1001권)
